More Murders
Toronto has suffered 12 murders year to date, 2/3 due to gunshots. Last year at this time we only had 5 murders, 40% due to gunshots. That is a dramatic increase year over year.
I am a big fan of Toronto. I've always admired how well we incorporate living downtown and eyes on the street with a large multicultural city full of people from all over the world. The murder rate has been low for years and the city is ranked as the eighth safest large city in the world.
There is a new fear amongst Torontonians that there are more guns on the streets and thus more shootings and killings. I hope that fear is unfounded and that the remainder of the year shows no appreciable increase in murders.
Time will tell.
