Barbie is being re-designed.
The Original will stay, but three new body shapes are being introduced: tall, curvy and petite. In addition, seven skin tones are coming along with 22 eye colours and 24 hairstyles. Mattel is following the lead of American Girl whereby girls can create a doll that looks like them, thus increasing their loyalty to the brand.
Barbie is Mattel's biggest seller. There are numerous other toys competing for girls' attention these days and Barbie sales have been dropping. Mattel is thus innovating to try to win back some of the business they have lost in recent years.
Similar to Coke Classic, though, the Original will always survive.
