Brothers and Sisters
My brother is busy...really really busy. He and I are very different people in many ways yet wildly similar in others.
I treasure and enjoy his company, even when I disagree with him. I am grateful that he is in my life. He treated me to sushi at Ki yesterday and I had a great time.
I love hanging out with my four children. I marvel at the love they share as siblings while at the exact same time watching them annoy the bejesus out of each other. It is a fascinating paradox. They are immensely lucky to have each other and I look forward to watching their relationships evolve over time.
Siblings are not chosen. And there is inevitable conflict, particularly once spouses are brought into the mix. But the underlying hope is that the bond you share will last a lifetime and that bond will get you through the inevitable highs and lows of life as you travel along. The objective is to always be somewhat together even if separated by great distances. To be a permanent although perhaps not always wanted fixture in each other's lives. To become stronger because of the other. That is the hope.
