Surprise Talent
I am not a fisherwoman...never have been...never understood the attraction.
My kids, on the other hand, have been fishing with my dad since they were babies. They love to fish. We all woke up at 6:10 am because they insisted on going to grab their new fishing poles so they could fish off the dock up north.
My dad is not here. Hence the kids tasked me with readying their fishing poles for casting and catching. I messed it up. My youngest son was extremely upset with me when an unlikely hero came to the rescue.
I have been married for 26 years and today was the first time I learned that my husband used to fish with his dad on the Halifax pier when he was 6 years old. That experience along with a decent ability to figure things out kicked in today while I watched him fix the mess I had made, to the delight of our son and to my complete and utter surprise.
He is now trying to figure out our oldest daughter's fishing rod, a more expensive version of her brothers' that is more complex. Given what I just witnessed, I suspect he'll be able to figure it out.
It is shocking when someone you have known intimately for 26 years surprises you with new knowledge and new behaviour you never knew he had. A nice sort of surprise...
